3.2.1

3 facts I learned
3. France had major control over Africa during the times of Imperialism.

2. India played a key part in Britains success during this time.

1. British soldiers often made the Indians their servents.

2 Things I learned
2. Ethiopia was one of the first places in Africa to become modernized.

1. When Britain took control over India the indians had it worse off then they did before because instead of growing crops for their own people they now had to grow them for Britain too and they were running out of things for their people.

1 question i still have
i wonder if Britain would have still be successful without India?

Ghandi Quote

I have a personal favorite Ghandi quote and its one everyone should live by, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." It means that if you want something done you can't just talk about doing it or tell people you want it done you, yourself, has to be the one to do it. If you want peace you have to start with yourself, you have to feel it to be able to preach it.

The Suez Canal Today

As opposed to the days of imperialism Egypt has complete and total control over the Suez Canal. Ships still use it today and in 2003 it was reported that 17,224 ships passed through the canal. It helps the worlds economy because it makes shipping to places a lot easier and faster. It also helps gets weapons and things to places at a quicker rater.

Ethiopia

Ethiopia was one of the only colony's to successfully resist the Europeans but it took a lot of fighting. Their leader Menelik the third had successfully played Britain, France and Italy against eachother. They were all trying to get Ethiopia into their Spheres of Influence. Menelik built up a huge arsenal of weapons that he had purchased from France and Russia. He was about to sign a treaty with Italy when he noticed they translated differently. He then revoked the treaty which made Italy mad and they fought against eachother in the greatest battle known to African history, the Battle of Adowa. Menelik came out on top and started to modernize his country.

Protectorate

One way an empire could control a colony was by being it's protectorate. It's an internal government that's controlled by an outside force. An example would be the Niger River Delta, it was in Africa but Britain had control over it. It's like the colony's government is a puppet that is controlled by someone else.

3 good and bad reasons about imperialism.

Helped

1. It helped get economies started. Bigger more prosperous countries were taking over smaller colonies and controling them which established trade which created an economy for that place. It also helped the economy of the controling country.

2.It helped with expansion. People from other parts of the world could travel to places in the world that they never would. They now had a reason  to because of the trading going on and the government control.

3. Imperialism also helped make people more civilized . It helped make places that weren't civilized more modern and more appealing.

Hurt

1.It caused a lot of rebellion. Some of the places that were being taken control of didn't agree and tried fix it themselves. It caused a lot of fighting with countries.

2.People became power hungry and tried to have control over as many places as they could. Sometimes they would do whatever it took to gain control of another territory.

3. It took away culture. When the British and French and all those people would take over a place they would often try and make the people in that place follow their beliefs and speak their language which got rid of the African culture.

Darwin's Theory of Evolution

Darwin discovering this gave another reason as to how we got here.  In a time when a lot of people just believed that god put us here he went against the grain to say that science might have something to do with it. Charles Darwin was the one who discovered it and it started a huge contraversy. We still study it today and it's still just as big of a contraversy as it was back then.

The Phonograph

Thomas Edison invented this in 1877. It's purpose was to work like a telephone and telegraph. He believed that a telephone message could be recorded and played back over and over again. He used the diaphram to figure out how to get the messages to play back. The speaking vibrations engraved the message into the paper. Later on he used metal cylinders instead of paper. He found that this worked better than te paper. It was somewhat of a popular item back in that time period.

Chapters 10/11

These chapters are about the steps that leaders took to get us further then the past years. During this time period a lot of reforms were being made which made things a little more fair for men at least. Luxury was also a big thing during this time. Also during this time Europe was making it's pesence known in Africa and other places around there. In these chapters Europe enters a period of colonization.
