As opposed to the days of imperialism Egypt has complete and total control over the Suez Canal. Ships still use it today and in 2003 it was reported that 17,224 ships passed through the canal. It helps the worlds economy because it makes shipping to places a lot easier and faster. It also helps gets weapons and things to places at a quicker rater.
